Insomnia – What it is and Causes it

Sleep is an important factor in our well-being. It is suggested the approximately 35% of adults suffer from insomnia. Our heard psychologist, Mary Magalotti and the Life Resolutions team of psychologists provide mental health services regarding insomnia. What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is the inability to say or fall asleep at night no matter how tired you are. This causes sleep to be restless and non-restorative. Insomnia can cause a range of health issues to cause by sleep deprivation.

Insomnia can put you at greater risk of experiencing:

  • depression

  • anxiety

  • weakened immune system

  • high blood pressure

  • heart disease

  • Decrease in memory, focus and judgment

It is reported that approximately 40% of people that suffer from insomnia, also suffer from a mental disorder. It is important to seek help when tackling insomnia as it can have serious effects on your overall wellbeing.

What Causes Insomnia?

Insomnia can be caused by a range of factors. Some of the most common causes include:

  • stress

  • poor sleep habits or not keeping to a sleep schedule

  • mental health disorders

  • chronic pain

  • caffeine and nicotine consumption

  • lack of exercise

  • using electronic devices just before sleep

Insomnia can be caused by environmental, lifestyle and health factors. This makes it important to treat each insomnia cause individually to highlight the cause of the disorder.
